Biology
Welcome to Biology I. This is a college preparatory introduction to Biology for students who wish to further pursue their interest in science or be inspired to do so. The class is lab-based, and we do as many actual experiments as we can while taking the time to analyze them thoughtfully.

A note about Q: Q is handy. It lets you see the gradebook as it being worked on. However, Q, for some reason, does not display to the parent and student users all the information used to calculate their grade. This class is weighted by category - 33% classwork, 33% homework, 33% tests and quizes. Furthermore, individual assignments are further weighted according to how much time we have spent on them in class. None of this is shown in Q, but is discussed extensively in class. If you really need a spreadsheet with the missing information, it can be sent individually. For a more detailed discussion of class policies and procedures, here is a link to the syllabus. |
Click on this sentence to go to the on-line class schedule. In the spreadsheet, click on the Biology I tab at the bottom of the page. The schedule is written on the south wall of the classroom on Monday at the beginning of the week. It covers material and due dates for the next seven days. On rare occasions (snow days, unforeseen lab adventures, etc.) the schedule may change. In those cases, due dates will almost always be pushed back and the classroom calendar will change before the on-line one. |
We do genetics experiments with Planting Science, and the program is all kinds of awesome. The classes choose their own variable, perform their own experiments on Fast Plants, and skype with a mentor/practicing scientist. Here is a summary of one class's project.
